6 Ideas For Creating An Office In Your Loft

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a huge increase in the demand for home offices. Working from home has become the norm for so many people, yet many still don’t have a suitable work environment at home that they enjoy working from.

Working from the dining room table or from your bed was all well and good as a temporary work around solution during the pandemic, but there comes a point where enough is enough and you need a space at home that motivates you to deliver your best work.

Maybe you don’t have the space? Perhaps you do but feel that space is better used as a bedroom or extra living space? So, now what?

The answer could be right in front of you. Or to be more specific, above you! Our loft conversion specialists are on hand to discuss all the possibilities your loft space could offer you.

Benefits of using your loft space for a home office

  • It provides you with increased living space, meaning you don’t have to sacrifice a room solely or partly used for work.
  • The loft being slightly set apart from the rest of the house makes for a quieter, more peaceful working environment.
  • Loft conversions often don’t require planning permission as you often would for an extension or conservatory.
  • Converting your loft will increase the value of your property.
  • Your energy efficiency is usually increased, saving you money on hefty energy bills.
  • If and when your office space is no longer required, it can easily be transformed in to living space to better suit your needs.

Making the most of your loft office

We’ve discussed the benefits of a loft conversion for office space, but how do you maximise your converted loft area to best suit your requirements?

Loft conversions come in all different shapes and sizes, so there isn’t one simple rule when it comes to how to get the most out of your office space. Knowing what type of loft is right for your home can be difficult, but here are a few ideas and tips on getting the most out of your converted loft office.

Office loft ideas and tips

  1. Maximise the space

One of the best ways to save space or maximise the space you have available is to build into the natural nooks and crannies that most lofts possess.

A lot of homes have pitched roofs that creates ideal spaces under the eaves for storage that’ll help keep your desk free of clutter.

You’ll no doubt have some kind of alcove that could be used for a desk or office equipment, so use these areas to provide you with the maximum amount of space possible for other other uses.

  1. Make it multi-purpose

Why stop at just an office? A lot of loft conversions will have the space to allow you to double up and use any spare space for a secondary purpose.

You may opt to use the extra space for an additional bedroom. There may be space for a sofa and TV that’ll make for a nice cosy extra living area. Maybe a playroom for the younger kids or a games room for the teens (and adults) to enjoy? The possibilities are endless…

  1. Add roof windows

Lofts are notorious for being dark and dingey places within the house, but they needn’t be, and a Velux loft conversion can be a great way of bringing natural light into the room.

Natural light when working is said to improve your mood, health and wellbeing as it helps improve concentration and regulate your body clock. Velux windows in your roof are great way to brighten up the loft, whilst making the room aesthetically pleasing and more inviting at the same time.

  1. Keep things slimline

If your loft conversion is on the smaller size, you may want to consider the furniture and equipment you’re kitting-out your loft office with to maximise your space. That said, you may want to consider this even if you have a larger attic as this will allow space for other things.

Narrow, slim desks are readily available and may be ideal for an office loft space. Likewise, other office equipment is available in all shapes and sizes and opting for smaller options may be the way to go if you’re looking to give yourself as much space as possible.

  1. Add some colour

Injecting some colour into your loft office will make it a much more inviting and comfortable space to work from.

You may want to consider painting your walls pale shades of blue or grey if you’re looking to brighten up the office. Avoid dark ceilings if you’re looking to keep things fresh and bright.

Feature walls are a popular choice at the moment and are a great way to make a statement with a bold colour or wallpaper on one of your walls.

Deeper, darker shades are great if you’re going for a cosy feeling space. Just be sure to give yourself enough light, be that natural or artificial, when you’re not looking to cosy up and work is on the agenda!

  1. Keep the noise out – soundproofing your loft

When you’re hard at work, the last thing you need is distracting noises that disrupt your focus. If you’re converting your loft in to an office, you may want to consider soundproofing the loft.

This not only prevents noise from coming into the area you’re working in, but also restricts sound from leaving the space.

Soundproofing if you’re doubling up your loft office as games room, cinema room, music studio, or anything else where sound could be an issue for either the rest of the house or neighbouring properties could prove a sensible move.

Dragos and his team did a great job for us. They provided a complete end to end service from design, architecture and planning permission, full loft construction and decorating. Early on in the project, with the support of Dragos, we decided to make a fundamental change to the design. They took this in their stride with no material change to the cost. The team were considerate, skilled, polite and reliable throughout the project. I would thoroughly recommend The Loft Room to anyone considering a loft extension or major alteration.

From the moment we spoke to Maggie, we felt The Loft Room was the right company for us. The whole admin team (Maggie, Melissa, Helen and Ciara) are warm and friendly, and super efficient. Dave and Ashley (and Charlie) have done a fantastic job converting our loft. We have wholeheartedly trusted Dave’s expertise with him having completed 42 lofts previously. We are absolutely delighted with the results so far. The tradespeople that have been over have been excellent: Mark and Kasper - the roofers, Stuart - electrician, Justin - plasterer, Dave - painter etc. We did get some lower quotes from other companies, but we think there’s a strong case of ‘you get what you pay for’ with The Loft Room. The whole process was surprisingly smooth and unobtrusive - we just hadn’t expected that from a loft conversion. We would definitely recommend The Loft Company.

Really happy with the finished loft conversion! The team was very friendly, professional, and respectful of our home throughout the project. While it took a little longer than initially expected, we put it down to the extreme heat of the summer we just had. The quality of the final build makes it well worth it—would recommend!

We recently had a rear dormer completed by The Loft Room, which also involved lowering the ceilings throughout the first floor. The efficiency and quality of the work carried out are the main reasons we’ve given five stars. We felt the administrative and communications side of the process could have been better, but ultimately the most important thing for us was the quality of the build, and in that respect we were extremely happy. The team on site were excellent and always treated the house as our home rather than simply a building site. They were respectful, tidy and a pleasure to have around throughout the project. Dragos has been a joy to work with and brought a huge amount of calm, experience and knowledge to the project. Lulian, on site, was the ultimate professional. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and the quality of his workmanship was excellent. Overall, we’re really pleased with the end result and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The Loft Room based on the quality of the work and the team we had on site.

We are so happy with our new loft space and have been really impressed with The Loft Room from start to finish. Communication throughout the project has been excellent. Marius and his team worked incredibly hard to meet deadlines while taking great care and pride in their work. Helen in the office, along with Marius, were always on hand to keep us updated on progress and talk us through the different choices and options available. It was also really helpful having a clear contract in place detailing exactly what was included in the agreed costs. This made budgeting much easier and meant there were no unexpected or surprise costs along the way. We can’t wait for the final touches to be completed so we can start enjoying our family’s new space. Thank you to the whole team for all your hard work — we’re really happy with the result!

We are delighted with our new loft conversion by The Loft Room. The whole process went incredibly smoothly, from the planning stage all the way through to decorating. A huge thank you to Vio, who led the team on our project. Vio and the team’s hard work and dedication has transformed our house. Vio kept everything running on track, maintained a high standard of work, and was always a pleasure to deal with. He and his team treated our home with respect and made sure the details were done right. And also, a special mention to all in the office whose excellent communication kept us in the loop throughout. We would heartily recommend The Loft Room to anyone looking to do a loft conversion. Thanks guys!

We are delighted with our new loft space! Our team leader, Mihai, was fantastic and kept us informed about progress throughout. Everyone who came to work on the space was friendly and communicative, and gave us advice about what might work best. Together, the team created a superb space with two bedrooms and a bathroom which are all spacious and finished to a very high standard. Mihai took time to make sure that everything was finished as we wanted it to be and went the extra mile to ensure downstairs where they had broken through was finished and integrated with the existing decor. The office team at The Loft Room were very helpful in keeping us up to date and checking in to make sure that we were happy with how everything was going. It made such a difference using a company who do loft conversions day in day out as it meant that everything ran smoothly, the project was managed for us and the build ran to the time scale presented to us from the start. We would highly recommend The Loft Room to anyone who is thinking about creating a new space.
